Greetings from Port Stanley

Looks like many are wondering about our disappearance after rounding the Horn almost a week back! Apologies for not updating the blog earlier but things moved a bit too fast after the Horn and the crew kept getting busier as we entered the Port and got on to the most important task of turning around Mhadei for the next leg. We are presently berthed at Port Stanley, getting the steering and generator fixed while also pampering Mhadei by meeting her small little demands which while not critical, are best attended to when there is a little shore time. She has weathered the Pacific at a trot and deserves all the attention! Meanwhile the crew, self and Lt Cdr Abhilash Tomy who landed up a day after I reached to help me with the work, are being looked after by the British armed forces and the friendly Falkland Islanders. This is perhaps the first time an Indian boat has touched the shores of the Islands so we are quite a novelty here. We landed up in time to meet "Ocean watch", and her crew. It was great to exchange notes with her skipper Mark Schrader who has two solo circumnavigations under his belt. Taking heed of the old saying that,"a picture is worth a thousand words," I will stop writing for now and let the viewers see some photos of the trip from rounding the Horn till reaching Stanley. Hopefully this will make up for the silence of the last few days to some extent!

Great to hear from you -- checked so many times with no update was beginning to wonder if those British pubs in Stanley had swallowed you up!

Not being a sailor, it's funny how hooked I am on following along with you solo sailors!
Glad you have a chance to rest up and get everything working again and ready for the final leg.

Well hello there Cdr Dilip, long time to see...I hope you're well and enjoying the moment at Port Stanley.

I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise to you and Mhadei for the serious and unforgiveable typo on the original graphic I prepared for your rounding of Cape Horn, so sorry about that but it has now been corrected...see attached pic.

I hope everything goes well for you through your maintenance processes in Port Stanley so you can be on your way again towards completing your voyage.

Thankyou so much for the fantastic photos, they are beautiful beyond belief. The sunset one in particular is simply gorgeous.

Congratulations on all your accomplishments so far. I shall look forward to reading about your continuing journey.

Fair winds and calm seas Sir Dilip. Take good care of yourself and bye for now.
Kind regards, Sam XX

Congratulations on your progress and I'll be looking forward to your onward voyage.

Hi Dilip,
Really great to see that everything is alright with you. Enjoyed your pictures, and was glad to hear that Mhadie was getting some TLC, she deserves it. Read somewhere that you had quite an escort into Port Stanley, I'll bet that was a joyful moment.
I hope you had some good R&R and plenty of hot food. Get yourself prepared for another leg of your journey.
When will you be departing from Port Stanley, and can you give us a little insight as to your future plans? Looking forward to hearing from you again, and I really enjoyed those pictures.
Good luck on your repairs, the big ones and the little ones, and take care of yourself. Safe travels and may God be with you.
Your in my prayers.

Hello Commander Donde,

Wonderful to hear from you again.

For those of us who will most likely not have the opportunity to travel to the cape and the Falkland Islands your writing and beautiful photographs bring us closer to what it must be like...thank you Dilip. I especially like the "escort" and Mhadei sailing into Port Stanley.

Hello and best wishes to Lt. Cdr Abhilash Tomy who is helping you with the repairs.

I look forward to the rest of your voyage.

Your photos are beautiful & also nice to see your escort into port. Quite fitting for a man of your calibre we think.

Hello Crd Donde (Beverly here in Tasmania). Thank you for your blog and the absolutely stunning pictures. Loved the one of your "escort" - mightly wonderful!
I hope the British are taking very good care of you and you are enjoying their hospitality.

Good thing your "sidekick" got there in order to help you put some finishing touches to Mhadei. Did her builders make it down there also? I hope so in order to redo the automatic steering.

Well, hope you have an enjoyable R&R there in the Falklands and hope to see you "take off" again real soon. Always enjoy your blogs and always love you pictures. You are quite the photographer. God be with you the entire rest of your circumnavigation and remember His Legions of Angels are always surrounding you and Mhadei in your endeavours. Beverly & Andrew Penney (Tasmania)

Thank you for the update.
Do remember to stock up well with WD40. Give a treat to "Chippy" for great idea. He certainly outperformed the electrician.

Trust the bilge pump has been o/hd with liberal doses of WD40 on bearings and bushes.

Our entire batch wishes you great R&R and look forward to some more action from the official photographer.

Do pls post pics of Mhadei's interior and exterior, now that you are in port.

Hello Dilip,

congrats on reaching Stanley safely. Certainly had your share of moments in the process. Comes with the territory I guess. No need for apologies, understand completely the urgency in getting Mhadei ship-shape. I would imagine the local media would've kept you on you toes too and kudos to the British Armed Forces for their hospitality.

Amazing photography Dilip. The pictures certainly belie the infamous reputation one would expect down there. Beautiful moments in time. Hope to see more

I understand you will be back on the water Feb 2. Can't wait to see you sailing again. Best of luck on this next leg to Cape Town.
Rest well Dilip.

We’ve missed you. So good to here that the much needed maintenance is progressing well. And I don’t mean only Mhadei. I bet you are appreciating the time on shore to recuperate a bit. Your photos are absolutely outstanding. You’re escort into Port Stanley must have felt like quite an honor, but very well deserved. You are indeed making history and should feel extremely proud of your accomplishments. I’m sure looking forward to your departure and further updates from you, Dilip. Dilip,------Great to hear from you. You sound relaxed and happy. I bet it's a joy to work on Mhadei and get her ship-shape again for the next leg. Maybe some of Jessica's luck in having no electrical or mechanical problems so far will rub off on you.

Thanks for taking the time to download the photos. I can't seem to get enough of looking at Cape Horn from the perspective of a passing boat. It's just awesome!

A little trivia about Port Stanley:
Named after Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, who served as U.K.'s Prime Minister three times between 1852 and 1868. He never visited.

Jessica Watson has faced her toughest test to date on her solo circumnavigation, having experienced a violent storm overnight with hurricane-force wind gusts of up to 70 knots and a swell of 7-10 metres, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Thank you Commander Dilip, for the news and the SUPERB pictures. There must have been a third ship around to take at least one or two of them!
Mhadei looks fine.

Have a good rest, and good repairs for her.

Jessica went through a dreadfully violent storm and is safe after four knock-downs. Her boat is tough and she is made of some kind of aussie steel, what a girl!

I have no idea if you can catch her before The Cape, but probably not. It would have been fun though to reach Good Hope (about) together, as for the Horn.

All the best for you!

Hi Cdr Donde (Beverly here in Tasmania). Well, my heart is still beating out of my body after reading what our little Jessica has just come through. The 70kt winds, humonguous waves, and four knockdowns. NOW, please don't you get into any weather like that and do the same thing just because you can. I swear, I don't think your "adopted" family can take it twice. I think I will never be a sailor, I'll just stick to my little cabin cruiser and stay in the smooth rivers here in Tassie. No venturing out at all. Please take care of yourself and PLEASE stay clipped on, Jessica experienced some really huge rogue waves and I wouldn't want anything to happen to you because you weren't clipped on. Promise???

Hello Dilip,
Just drifting across from Jesse's blog to say hi hope you are well and wondering how repairs to Mhadei are proceeding.

Those pictures are quite spectacular and hey what an escort!

Well as you are probably aware young Jessica has had 4 Knockdowns! in a 8 hour storm she's just been through and a quick look at the weather for the South Atlantic doesn't look good for her, I'm afraid she'll experience more of these, but I am hoping not....

Anyway Dilip....get back out there as soon as you can...it sounds like Port Stanley has been real good to you...its nice to hear that!

Good Evening Cdr Donde (Beverly here in Tasmania) Well, it's Sunday evening here, still beautiful weather. Which is much more than I can say for poor Jessica. Please if you have half a chance, jump over and read her blog for today. Hmmm, maybe you shouldn't, you might not want to leave Port Stanley. But, thanks to our Great God above, she has come through that horrific storm with only minor damage to EPL and inside the cabin - well, her toilet is in a million pieces and she has many bruises and her stove won't light, but those are all minor - she is ALIVE and still just as positive as ever. She is one heck of a girl. She might even appreciate a call from you to buck her up even more. Would be a nice gesture. (Tuesday is Australia Day for her and us.)

Well, continue enjoying Port Stanley for awhile. I'm sure you are being taken care of. And please, please, put extra bolts and duct tape all over Mhadei for the South Atlantic crossing. Just in case...

Take care and God Bless You! Beverly & Andrew Penney, Tasmania

Hi again Cdr. Donde. Just wanted to step in and say a few words, if I may, to some of your bloggers. Thanks.

Georgia Guy: I'm so sorry for not replying to your email. I really, really meant to, really. About the time I received it, is when my account got hit by hackers, not only did they hack in but then they linked on, screwed up my facebook account too. Was a real mess trying to get it straightened out. But I finally "outsmarted" the hackers and have my yahoo email back (tho' not my facebook), as well as my hotmail account now. So I will return your letter.

Samurai: I "always love" reading your blogs dear Sam, they are so uplifting and funny. And...your artwork is fantastic! I went to your site and checked you out, LOL, and I really love your t-shirt. Keep on keepin' on my dear.
Are you coming to Sydney in May?

The McGraths: I don't think I could go a day without reading a blog from you guys either. You are real rocks, just like Michael(75).

Michael(75): Just like the McGraths' blogs, Michael, my day just wouldn't be complete with reading a blog from you! ...and Sam, and Richie, and Georgia Guy, Susan in Oregon, Paul, Room 401, Mary in Maine, Molly in Maine, Globemasterone, Ingrid in Sweden, Trudy in Austria/Australia, Stefan in Germany, Evie in Bendigo, Rex in St Johns Newfoundland, SaltyDog in Seattle, Jony the Pony (would love to read your profile), and Toni. There are a zillion others I "have" to read before my day is complete, way too many to name and I'm sorry if I have slighted anyone, that definitely wasn't my intention.

There is one, though, that personally for me, I wish would NOT blog on Cdr Donde's blogspot nor on Jessica's, and that is ETgurl. What ever possesses someone to have such a negative, racist, and demeaning personality, and then to have the nerve to put their comments on paper for all to read I will never know, nor do I want to. I try to pass this person's comments by and not read them, but I do because I feel I need to apologize to Cdr Donde and Jessica and really, to all the Jessaholics for the unthinking, under-handed, stupid, dumb remarks she makes. Oh well, all I can really do is ask God to help me get over the feelings I have for this person. Apparently God has a reason for this person being here and who am I to question Him? I just ask all the Jessaholics to forgive me for being, and getting, so upset over this person that I spend time writing comments regarding her. I normally don't have such a mean, nasty temperment but ETgurl brings some evil out in me that I can't control. I have no idea why. I just ask your forgiveness and God's most of all.

Well family, it is 11:30pm here and I haven't eaten tea yet as I have been reading back comments on Jessica's page. I'm still not caught up but I keep trying.

Cdr Donde, forgive me for using your site to dump about a certain person. I don't mean to take anything away from you. I follow you faithfully each and every day and will continue to until you dock back in India. Oh no, oh no, oh no - what will we do then? As with Jessica when she gets to Sydney, and the blogs cease, we are all going to have withdrawals. Guess you'll have to do it again, this time, back to front, or east to west, or north to south, or up and down, or anything, on a skateboard being pulled by a dolphin? LOL I will definitely miss you when you finish your circumnavigation. (You know, that word is hard to type, I have to slow down and spell it out when I type it). LOL

Be safe, have fun, know that God is on your side and He is with you during this journey. Beverly

Hi Cdr Donde (Beverly here in Tasmania) Did I miss something or is it your Republic Day? If it is and I missed it, a belated Happy Republic Day. I am remiss in looking up Indian holidays, just been too lazy I reckon. I know the American and Australian holidays because I'm "both" and I know German because I lived there for 17 years. But...now I have to go back to school (Laptop University) and learn more about your country's holidays so I won't appear to be so dumb. See, I do keep saying, "You can teach an old dog new tricks."

I have learned so much from you and Jessica, just by following your blogs and reading the comments of your faithful followers, because whenever I come across something I don't know, well, I just HAVE to look it up. And I thank you both very, very much for that opportunity.

How are the repairs coming? It is getting pretty close to the 2nd of Feb, isn't that your "take off" date? Golly gee whiz, I sure can't wait til you get back "on the road again, making music with your friends", well, it's a song and you don't make music but you blog and we answer, and comment, and comment, and comment.

Well...this is just a "short" note (maybe I should look up the meaning of "short" huh?) to let you know that I'm thinking about you and wishing you all the best as you finish repairs on Mhadei and get a last bit of quality rest yourself. Stock up on some good rations so you can enjoy yourself when you have good weather.

Remember GOD is with you all the way on this journey of yours, just don't forget that. And His Legions of Angels are surrounding you and Mhadei, protecting you and guiding you towards your next stop over.

Remember, take much more WD-40, all sizes of nuts & bolts, duck tape (for sure), and you know, a couple tubes of super glue probably wouldn't be a bad idea, LOL

Have a relaxing week until you leave again for the voyage of a lifetime. Beverly & Andrew Penney, Tasmania

Hi Dilip,
Hope all your repairs are going well for you, and that you are getting plenty of R&R. I know that you said that you were getting treated very well there, please don’t get spoiled, you may never want to leave. LOL…..
I suppose you heard that Jessica had a pretty rough time further on in the Atlantic. Had four (4) knockdowns and everything got pretty wet. One of her stainless steel frames got pretty well bent, her cabin got messed up a bit, but she, being Jessica, came through it real well. She was laughing and in high spirits. She is an Aussie!!!!!

For WorkerBev: thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate them. I have been slacking off a little bit, but I’m getting back in the groove again. Hey, did you miss any of your favorites????? LOL…..

Hi Dilip,

How are you? I hope that Mhadei is all ship shape again and you are feeling refreshed after a little rest on land.

I guess you have heard about Jesse's encounter with the hurricane force winds. EPL stood her ground and with Jesse being the brave little sailor she is and the strong and sturdy EPL, they got through the storm okay. I was really worried about her, as her parents, team and everyone was.

Also, Abby Sunderland has set off last Saturday on her voyage. She is settling in to a routine, although she is feeling quite tired as she hasn't been sleeping that much. I guess it's something you adjust to?

Well just sign off but take care Dilip and I wish you a safe departure from Port Stanley. By the way, when will you be leaving Port Stanley?

With warmest wishes from Jan Pace (Auckland, New Zealand)
